How it Works
Qualifications
We only require that you are at least 18 years old and know English. You are NOT required to know a second language. We look for individuals who are dependable, patient, interested in helping others, respectful of confidentiality, and sensitive to different backgrounds and cultures.
Time Commitment
We ask that you commit for one year as a tutor. This allows you and your Learner to build a trusting relationship and to see progress. Tutoring is to be conducted once a week, in a public place, for one to one and a half hours. Tutors spend approximately one hour in preparation prior to tutoring sessions.
Routine Reports
As a tutor, you will submit monthly reports summarizing lessons and materials covered, as well as the progress of your Learner.
Positive Outcomes
A Deeper Understanding of Different Cultures & Lifestyles
Our learners come from a vast variety of backgrounds and cultures. The one-on-one interaction will not only benefit the learner, but you as a tutor will also develop an on-going relationship. Tutors begin to understand the different challenges our learners face when in a new country, or when they lack the ability to read or write.
Connecting With Your Community
As a volunteer tutor, you have the opportunity to meet many wonderful individuals and their families. Tutors have expressed the joy of learning about their learners' hopes and dreams, cultural backgrounds, and in developing long-lasting friendships.
